Character Counter

Character limits shape a surprising amount of everyday writing: meta descriptions, page titles, text messages, social posts, form fields, product names and database columns all cap out at a fixed number. This counter shows exactly where you stand against the limits that come up most often.

How it works

• Characters = every unit including spaces and punctuation
• Excluding spaces = all characters minus whitespace
• SMS parts = 1 up to 160, then ⌈characters ÷ 153⌉

The progress bars fill as you type and turn red the moment you cross a limit, so you can edit down rather than guess.

A worked example

A meta description of 178 characters looks fine in your CMS but gets cut off mid-sentence in search results — Google typically shows around 155–160. Trimming "In this article we will explain how to…" down to "How to…" usually recovers 30 characters and improves the snippet at the same time.

How to interpret your result

Treat published limits as hard ceilings and aim to land 5–10% below them. Interfaces render text at different widths, and a description that just fits on desktop may still truncate on a narrow phone. If a field silently accepts more than its limit, the excess is usually discarded on save.
