Data Transfer Time Calculator
Work out how long a download, upload or backup will really take from your file size and connection speed — with overhead built in.
Your transfer time
22 min 25 sec
realistic estimate
- Theoretical best
- 19 min 3 sec
- Effective throughput
- 8.8 MB/s
- File size
- 10 GB
- At half speed
- 44 min 49 sec
The realistic figure allows for around 15% protocol and network overhead.
How it works
Before you start a large upload, back up a laptop or migrate a server, it helps enormously to know whether you're waiting five minutes or five days. This calculator converts a file size and a connection speed into a realistic transfer time.
How it works
Seconds = (file size in bytes × 8) ÷ speed in bits per secondRealistic time = theoretical time ÷ 0.85, allowing ~15% overheadThroughput in MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8
The overhead allowance covers TCP acknowledgements, TLS encryption, packet headers and the small pauses between files. Heavily congested or long-distance links lose more.
A worked example
A 50 GB video project on a 70 Mbps connection: 50 GB is 400,000 megabits, divided by 70 gives about 5,714 seconds — roughly 1 hour 35 minutes at theoretical speed, or just under two hours realistically. On the same package's 20 Mbps upload, the same file takes over six hours, which is why uploads always feel disproportionately slow.
How to interpret your result
Treat the realistic figure as your planning number and the theoretical one as a best case you'll rarely hit. If your actual transfer takes more than twice the realistic estimate, something else is the bottleneck — Wi-Fi signal, a slow hard drive, a throttled server, or thousands of small files rather than one large one.
Common real-world uses
- Planning cloud backups and first-time syncs.
- Estimating video upload times before a deadline.
- Deciding between uploading and shipping a physical drive.
- Comparing broadband packages using real transfer times.
- Scheduling server migrations and large database restores.
